About our family business

We are currently in our 101st year of trading, with the 5th generation of our family working in the business.  We deliver to a small number of businesses and to the public, throughout East and Midlothian from Monday to Saturday. We pride ourselves on providing quality and a first class customer service, which we are renowned for.

Our family business is run by John, Neil and Pamela. It has been trading since 1921, supplying all types of fish, smoked fish, seafood and shellfish (fresh and frozen). See more about where our fish come from. Our speciality is our own superb oak-smoked salmon and our very own smoked haddock (dyed and undyed), smoked on the premises.

A brief history of the family business

James Dickson Snr (1877-1952), was a Chief Skipper and later promoted to Commander Auxiliary Patrol in the Royal Naval Reserves (from 1915-1920) and commanded a number of heavy trawlers / minesweepers (The Olive Leaf, White Oak, Valiant II, HMS Pekin and La Parisienne). Upon being demobilized he purchased a trawler named the Undertow in 1921 and went to sea until he sold this in 1924 and started up the family fish processing business near Cockenzie Old Harbour.

His son John Dickson Snr went to work for him and in later years his son James Dickson Jnr (1933-2011) joined the business, which has now been passed on to the present generation of the family. John, Neil and Pamela are presently involved in running the business and Pamela’s son Ramsay is the 5th generation to work for the business.
